IELTS

What is the IELTS? The IELTS is an English language proficiency test designed to assess the language ability of candidates aspiring to study or work in a country where English used as a medium of communication. More than 25 countries across the world accept IELTS scores for admission to higher educational institutes, training programs as well as for immigration purposes. In countries like Australia, the IELTS is mandatory. You will not be given a student visa without your IELTS score.

Who administers the IELTS?

The IELTS is jointly owned and administered by the University of Cambridge- Local Examination Syndicate, The British Council and the IDP Education Australia. The IELTS is available world-wide in more than 110 countries.

You may collect the IELTS handbook along with the application form from your local British Council office or your nearest IDP Education Australia office.

For detailed information on test dates and centers you may log on to www.ielts.org. What are the different sections of the IELTS?

The different sections of the IELTS are the following:

A 30-minute Listening Section A 60-minute Reading Section A 60-minute Writing Section A 11-14 minute Speaking Section

Depending on the requirements of the universities you're applying to you must select either the Academic or General Training Reading and Writing modules.

The Academic modules evaluate the ability of the candidate to use the level of language necessary to follow a course of study- example following discussions, complex arguments and dealing with information effectively.

The General Training modules are mostly for those seeking work-related training in English speaking countries. They assess a broader range of language skills.

The listening and speaking modules are mandatory. The speaking module is conducted through a face-to-face interview. Total test time is 2 hours 45 minutes.

What is the scoring pattern in the IELTS?

In the IELTS, for each of the four sections you will get a band score. The four band scores will then be added and averaged for an Overall Band Score. Each band gives an indication of the standard of English at that level. There are in total nine bands. Band one stands for non-user while band nine stands for expert user.

Usually, most institutes demand an IELTS score of 6 to 6.5. However, score requirements may vary from institute to institute. You will receive your scores within two weeks of taking the test. Retaking the IELTS

Your IELTS score is valid for 2 years. In case you score less than what you expected or your score falls short of the minimum requirements of the universities you're applying to, you may retake the exam. However, you cannot retake it before three months of the first test date.

In US about 3500 institutions accept IELTS. Available in more than 800 locations throughout the world and offered 48 times per year, specific dates and locations for the IELTS can be found at www.ielts.org.

International English Language Testing System is an international standardized test to determine the proficiency in English language. It is jointly conducted by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations and the British Council and IDP Education Pty Ltd.

There are two versions of the IELTS: the Academic Version and the General Training Version:

Students and professionals such as doctors and nurses who want to enroll in good universities and institutions will opt for The Academic Training.

Those who are planning to undertake non-academic training in order to gain work experience for immigration purposes etc will choose The General Training.

IELTS does not require any minimum score to pass the test. IELTS results will be measured in bandwidths. These range from "band 1" ("non-user") to "band 9" ("expert user"). Those who did not attempt the test will get “band 0”. For IELTS each institute has its own thresholds. Institutes did not consider a report older than two years to be valid, unless the user shows that he has worked.

More than 400 test centers organize IELTS worldwide. Majority of the test centers are run by either the British Council or IELTS Australia.

Coming to the pattern of the exam, there are four sub-tests, or modules: Writing, Reading, Speaking, and Listening. Students must obtain all four sub-tests. While Listening and Speaking tests will be same for all students, Reading and Writing tests may differ, depending on which version of IELTS test they have selected.

On the day of the test, the four subsections will be taken in the following order:

The Speaking test might be delayed a day or two at some centers.

IELTS listening test lasts for about 30 minutes, which consists of four sections. To increase the difficulty levels these will be played on cassette tape. Each section might be a dialogue or a monologue. The questions must be answered while listening and the cassette is played once only. However, time will be given for students to check their answers.

Reading test lasts for 60 minutes. Depends upon the version, students are given either a General Training Reading test or an Academic Reading test. Both tests consist of three sections, and in both tests the sections are intended to increase difficulty.

Writing test also lasts for 60 minutes. Again, students take either an Academic test, or a General Training test. Students must perform two writing tasks, in which they need to present different styles of writing. There is no choice of questions.

Speaking test consist a one-to-one interview with a specially trained examiner. The same examiner will lead the candidate through the three phases of the test:

The interview will last for 11-14 minutes, where the candidate gives the introduction, speaks for one or two minutes on a particular topic, and then a mutual discussion takes place.

Test tactics:

Aim for a Target Score and prepare accordingly. Correct answers for first 5 questions will lead to higher scores. Cross check every answer and avoid wrong answers using the process of elimination. You can neither skip any question nor go back after you've answered a question. So fill it carefully. Don’t spend too much time on any questions. Even the toughest ones should be done in 1-2 minutes and the easiest ones in seconds.

Bring all the necessary belongings (for ex: watch, all the IDs which are having clear pictures, and a confirmation letter from the Educational Testing Service) to the test center. Don’t bring calculator or any other electronic devices since you are not allowed to use them.

GMAT

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a computer based entrance test for more than 5,800 business and management programs worldwide from the past six decades for being the reason that no other exam filters your management skills more than GMAT. Annually people are taking GMAT 2, 50,000 times around the world.

The GMAT exam will be administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). GMAC and the global non-profit council of business schools – sets the standard. Students can attend the GMAT exam, whenever they feel they are ready to take it. Centers will be available around the world. These are designed to provide an unparalleled test-taking experience so that the students can perform their best. A passport is the mandatory to attend the test. Students cannot take the test more than five times within a year and once in any calendar month.

The registration fee for the GMAT is USD 250. If a student want to reschedule the date, time, or location of his/her test they have to pay a rescheduling fee of USD 50. There is a USD 80 refund in case of any cancelation. This should be done minimum seven days prior to your test date.

On the day of the GMAT, students can send their scores to 5 schools for free. Apart from these five, for every additional score report, the test will cost USD 28.

These scores will be valid for 5 years but Universities ideally accept scores in the last 3 years.

Most universities take the highest score. Some might even take the best scores in different sections from different Tests. As long as the scores are improving, those will be beneficial for the student.

In GMAT, the level of difficulty may increase or decrease depends upon the answer you gave for each question respectively.

The GMAT exam consists of four sections: An analytical writing assessment, integrated reasoning, the quantitative section, and the verbal section. Total time for the test is three and a half hours.

The GMAT score depends upon the following three factors:

The number of questions answered Answers given for the difficulty level of the question Number of questions completed

There are 9 questions on the Quantitative section and 11 questions on the Verbal section. Verbal section is solely for the purpose of research by question framers and it does not contribute to the GMAT score, whether they are answered or not. But it is highly impossible to figure out which questions are experimental.

Theoretically, each of the Quantitative and the Verbal section is scored on a raw scale of 0-60 but practically the scores appear on a scale of 9-51. These scores combined to give the overall score between 200 and 800 and project your performance with respect to other test takers. This can be your measurement while applying for Universities.

GMAT is one of the important selection criteria. Other factors include leadership ability, job experience, interpersonal skills, motivation and thought process, and educational background, etc.

GMAT scores can be cancelled immediately after completing the test, if needed. As soon as the student finishes the test, the system asks whether to cancel the score or continue.

There are four modes of registration for the GMAT. They are Telephone, Fax, Postal, and Online.

TEST

The quantitative and verbal sections of the GMAT exam are both multiple-choice and are administered in the computer-adaptive format. The level of difficulty at the start of the verbal and quantitative sections will be average. As the students answer the questions correctly, the difficulty level will increase and the level will decrease if the answers are wrong.

The quantitative section measures the ability of reasoning to solve quantitative problems. It is designed to get the test taker’s abilities out to understand and to analyze, and to decide whether the information provided is relevant or irrelevant and it is sufficient or not.

Calculators are not allowed to the centers. Test takers must do their math work out by hand using a dry erase pen and laminated graph paper which are given to them at the testing center. Knowledge in topics like algebra, arithmetic, and geometry is required to attempt the questions. There are two types of quantitative questions: problem solving and data sufficiency. Scores range from 0 to 60, although they only report scores between 11 and 51.

The verbal section of the GMAT Exam measures the student's capability to read and comprehend written material to express ideas effectively in standard written English. The question types are critical reasoning, reading comprehension, and sentence correction. Scores range from 0 to 60, although they only report scores between 11 and 51.

Reading comprehension passages can be just one or few paragraphs or several paragraphs long. These comprehensions are from subjects like history, social sciences, business-related areas, and physical sciences. This section measures the ability to understand statements in passages, the logical relationship between concepts and the significant points, and the author’s point of view.

Critical reasoning questions are intended to test the reasoning skills involved in argument construction and arguments evaluation.

In the Sentence Correction section, questions were asked to determine if there is a mistake with a given sentence and if so, rewrite the sentence.

Integrated reasoning

Integrated Reasoning (IR) is designed to measure a test taker’s ability to evaluate data presented in multiple formats from multiple sources. The integrated reasoning section consists of 12 questions in four different formats: two-part analysis, graphics interpretation, multi-source reasoning, and table analysis. Integrated reasoning scores range from 1-8. Like the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA), this section is scored separately from the quantitative and verbal section. Performance on the IR and AWA sections does not contribute to the total GMAT score.

In the table analysis section, students are supposed to analyze a sortable spreadsheet and answer the following true or false questions. In the Graphics interpretation section, test takers have to interpret a graph or graphical image by selecting the correct answer from the drop down menu. Multi-source reasoning questions are accompanied by multiple sources of information presented tab wise. Test takers need to click on the tabs and examine all the relevant information to answer. These could be in the form of multiple-choice or yes/no. Two-part analysis section has questions with two components. Possible answers are given in a tabular format with a column for each component and rows with possible options. Test takers have to choose one response per column.

Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)

The Analytical Writing Assessment consists of a 30-minute writing task, which is either an argument or an analysis. It is important to be able to analyze the reasoning behind a given argument and write a critique of that argument. Two independent ratings will be given for the essay and these ratings are averaged together to determine the test taker's AWA score. Out of two ratings, Computer will give one rating and GMAC will give another rating. The automated essay-scoring engine evaluates more than 50 linguistic and structural features, including syntactic variety, organization of ideas, and topical analysis. If the difference between two ratings is more than one point, an expert reader will evaluate it and resolve the discrepancy.

The analytical writing assessment is graded on a scale of 1 to 6 in half-point intervals.

A deficient essay will be given a score of 1, A flawed essay will get 2, A limited essay will get 3, An adequate essay will be 4, and 5 and 6 will be given for those essays which are strong and outstanding respectively.

The total GMAT score depends on the quantitative and verbal sections together and ranges from 200 to 800. The average GMAT score is about a 540.

The score distribution resembles a bell curve with a standard deviation of approximately 100 points. This means 68% of examinees score between 400 and 600.

The score building algorithm that GMAT uses in correction is very complicated. If the test taker was not able to answer or attempted wrongly for the first question, his scores will not necessarily fall in the bottom half of the range. But if the same thing happens again and again the computer will recognize that item as anomaly.

One might not take the test more than once within 31 days, even if the scores are canceled. Official GMAT exam study materials are available on the mba.com online store and through third-party vendors.

As soon as you're definite to apply to business school, visit the official GMAT website, find the test center nearest you, and call to inquire about available test dates.

Business schools typically schedule interviews only after reviewing applications and convinced that the applicant is really serious about the admission. In general, chances are better for a candidate who is confident and highly focused in person to get an admission into business school than a candidate who is strong on paper, but arrogant or otherwise awkward in the interview.

According to the Graduate Management Admission Council, more than 1,500 universities in 82 countries use the GMAT as part of the selection criteria.

The GMAT requires a lot of preparation and careful planning.

Tips to improve your GMAT score:

Most students take three to six months for the preparation of the exam.

In this time get the knowledge about the test format and content. Because analytical writing section presents excerpts of business writing and asks you to evaluate how well reasoned they are.

Try to register as soon as you decided to write, as the tests fill up very quickly.

The quantitative and verbal sections of the test are designed and delivered in computer-adaptive format. It means as you keep answering the questions correctly, the computer keep giving you more difficult questions. At the same time, if you answer incorrectly, your next question will be easier.

Answer carefully to the initial questions in each section to increase your chances of getting into a high-scoring category for that section.

Following these essential strategies will help maximize your score:

Go through the GMAT study guide that includes plenty of sample tests. Speed up yourself can make you complete each test section within the allotted time. Timed practice tests also help you to do this. Start guessing only after you have eliminated one or two wrong answers. Quarter of a point will be deducted for each incorrect response and the computer does not allow you to return to unanswered questions. Integrated Reasoning will measure your ability in evaluating information presented in new formats and derived from multiple sources. Sources: mba.com, gmac.com A study by the U.S. Census Bureau reports that workers with a graduate-level degree earn 50 percent more than workers with an undergraduate degree and twice as much as workers with a high school diploma. The next step is to figure out how to finance your education. Financial aid is available in the form of loans, grants or scholarships for students wanting to attend business school. The federal government has standardized high rate of interest that lenders can charge on federally guaranteed student loans, so college loans have lower interest rates than other kinds of loans. This helps students to pay the money back and encourage more people to attend school. Also, assistance is provided for borrowers who are having difficulty to repay their education loans in the form of deferment and forbearance.

Stafford Loan

Stafford loan is the most common federal student loan. Stafford Loans include both the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program and the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program. Depending on the student's economic strength, these loans can be subsidized or unsubsidized. However, these loans are diffused directly to the students.

Private Loan

Private loans are another common type of student loan. These loans offer higher limits and no payments until graduation, but interest starts to accrue immediately upon loan distribution. Both students and parents are allowed to take private student loans, which are a better alternative than credit card debt.

For private loans, you need to fill federal forms, such as the FAFSA. Qualifying criteria often depends on you or your parents' credit score. Having a credit score more than 650 will better your chances of being approved for a private loan.

PLUS Loan

PLUS Loans are intended and designed for parents. Students must be enrolled as dependant at least half time in an undergraduate program in order for your parents to qualify for this type of loan.

A good credit score is mandatory for a PLUS Loan, and there is a yearly limit. This equals to your school costs. There will also be a small fee that your parents are required to pay (which is usually less than four percent of the loan).

Now, graduate and professional degree students are also eligible to lend under the PLUS Loan program referred as the Grad PLUS Loan program.

Grants are one of the finest ways to sponsor a business education, for the reason that they offer money that need not to be repaid.

There are over a thousand federal grant programs in the U.S.—worth over $400 billion and securing a student grant can help you save hundreds or even thousands of dollars. When a student completes a FAFSA (Free Applicant for Federal Student Aid), business schools often consider students automatically for grants.

Note: MBA and other graduate-level business students are not eligible for any broad-based federal grants. Federal grants are only awarded to undergraduate students.

Though Scholarships also play a crucial role in financial assistance, there is a tough competition for them.

Though, some scholarships apply to general education, many of them usually require a certain grade point or qualification, such as active involvement in a group or in an organization.

Qualified individuals may get funds from professional associations, private and public schools, religious organizations, small businesses, and community groups, in their respective industries, so on a overall basis it’s a good place to search for scholarships.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR WOMEN AND MINORITIES

To promote women and minority education to pursue business careers, there are many business scholarships specifically geared toward these two groups.

WORK-STUDY PROGRAMS

Students can finance their education by working in community related jobs, on-campus jobs, or teacher assistant jobs. Typically, factors such as level of financial need and school funding availability influence work-study programs. Generally, students choose work-study programs that are related to their field of study. This will be helpful for them to finance their education and also gives them experience to put on a résumé.

One can specify whether to be considered or not for work-study assistance while filling their FAFSA form.

There are two ways to verify the status of the application. Most of the universities provide the facility to check the status of the application online. For some universities you will have to mail to the admissions department or call the International graduate admissions office for status update. Never write lengthy mails and always make sure the pitch is friendly in nature.

The process

First, University will acknowledge that it has received Application packet of the student. Initial Processing will kick off. The communication part with University will commence. Students will do the Online Status check and in case if didn’t get any they start the follow-up. Students will receive GRE & TOEFL Scores from ETS and do initial Evaluation. Application file is forwarded from admissions office to concerned Department (only when student meets all score requirements). In Departmental Review they will mainly look at Resume, Academic scores, and Statement of Purpose. Decision Made and notified to students.

Finance Your Studies

Studying at U.S. institution is an expensive investment, but one we are sure you will find worthwhile. For the 2008-2009 academic year, The College Board reported the following average annual tuition costs by type of institution:

Two-year, Public Community Colleges: $2,402 Four-year, Public Institutions: $17,452 Four-year, Private Institutions: $25,143

These costs represent the cost of studies alone; when lodging, personal expenses, transportation, and other expenses are taken into account, The College Board suggests the following annual student budgets:

Four-year, Public Institutions (out-of-state students): $25,200 Four-year, Private Institutions (residents): $34,132

(The College Board, Trends in College Pricing, 2008)

Because studying in the United States will likely cost more than it does to study in your own country, it is important to start your financial planning at least 12 months before you intend to study in the United States. Please visit or contact the nearest SS Alight Consultants Branch to speak with experienced professionals who can guide you through the process.

Financing your college education consists of:

Compiling effective applications Assessing Personal Funds Identifying Sources of Financial Assistance Reducing Educational Costs Assessing Personal Funds

Consult your parents and other family sponsors to find out how much money they can commit each year to your education. Try to raise as much as you can from family sources, because most scholarship awards, if available, cover only part of the total educational and living costs and may not be available to first-year international students.

Identifying Sources of Financial Assistance

"Be realistic about how much you need and what you can really afford."

International studies and sociology student from Ghana.

All types of scholarships and financial aid for international students are highly competitive and require excellent academic records. You will often find the terms "scholarships" and "financial aid" used interchangeably, but technically speaking, a scholarship is a financial award based on merit, including outstanding academic performance, special talent in sports or performing arts, or perhaps community service or leadership. Financial aid is a "need-based" grant based on the student's financial need, as documented by family income, assets, and other factors. Below are the main types of financial assistance available for international students who want to study in the United States:

Home Country Funds: Conduct research at home to find possible funding from local government, corporate, or foundation sources. Although these sources are not found in all countries, you could reduce your educational cost with scholarships from local organizations.

Funding From Colleges/Universities: Meet with an SS Alight Consultants Counselors to learn how to research available financial aid for international students. Careful advance research and realistic expectations are more likely to result in success. Do not assume that all colleges award financial aid. In fact, less than half of the institutions offering bachelor's degrees can provide financial assistance to students who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Keep in mind that financial aid for U.S. students is separate from financial aid for international students. Be sure to tell the admissions office your country of citizenship and request information on financial aid available to non-U.S. citizens If offered, financial aid is usually made up of a number of different types of assistance, including grants and scholarships and occasionally loans or part-time work programs.

You will discover that financial aid is very rare at state, or public, colleges and at colleges that offer professional courses such as engineering, business administration, and health professions. More financial aid may be available from the private liberal arts colleges, which offer the arts and science subjects.

As you do your research, make a table listing the colleges you would like to attend. Write down annual costs (as outlined above), then enter the average financial aid award and the number of awards made by each of the colleges. Such information is available from resources in your information or advising center. This chart can quickly allow you to see where your best chances lie, and can help you eliminate from your list the colleges where your admission with the needed funding is not viable.

International students often ask advisers about full scholarships, which cover all the costs of education except for airfare. The total number of full scholarships available each year to incoming international students in the United States is about 1,000, offered by only about 100 colleges. To get a full scholarship, you must be one of the top students in your country, usually with "A"s (excellent) in almost every subject, high SAT and TOEFL scores, and distinguished performance in other areas such as leadership and community service. There are 20 top students from all over the world competing for each scholarship, so you must distinguish yourself among a pool of outstanding students.

Only a handful of wealthy colleges in the United States are able to meet the financial need of all the students they admit. (Please note that admission to these schools is usually very competitive.) Financial need is the difference between what you and your family can afford to contribute and the estimated cost of attending the college. The former is calculated on the basis of detailed information about your parents' financial circumstances, including supporting evidence such as bank statements, employers' letters, and other official documents and statements. Other universities, which make more limited awards on the basis of your financial need, will also ask to see such evidence.

Financial assistance from colleges is awarded at the beginning of the academic year and is rarely available for students entering mid-year in January or at other times. More aid is available for freshman students than for those transferring in from other institutions. Students who have already proven themselves at a college may find it easier to obtain financial assistance from that college than new students.

Sports Scholarships: Some U.S. colleges offer opportunities for gifted student athletes to play for the college team as a means of paying for their education.

International Awards: International students also ask about financial assistance from foundations, organizations, and the U.S. government (see the Find Financial Aid section below). Very little aid exists through such sources, and it is usually earmarked for advanced graduate students. Again, your educational adviser can tell you whether there are special funds available for students from your country.

Loans: In limited instances, you may be able to negotiate a loan to fund part of your educational costs. Your educational adviser may have information on loan programs for which you may be eligible. You must usually have a U.S. citizen co-signer to act as a guarantor for any loans from U.S. loan programs, and in most cases you must already be enrolled in a U.S. university before you apply. Before taking a loan, make certain you know how you are going to repay it, and how a loan will affect your plans for graduate or other further study and for returning home.

Employment: Current immigration regulations permit international students to work only part-time — up to 20 hours per week — and only on campus during their first year of study. By working 10 to 15 hours a week, you could earn enough to pay for incidentals such as books, clothing, and personal expenses, but your campus job cannot pay your major expenses, such as tuition or room and board. This income also cannot be used as a source of income for any official financial statements. Campus jobs may include working at the university's cafeteria, bookstore, library, or health club, or within the university's administrative offices.

After the first year, you can also apply for employment as a resident assistant (RA) in a university dormitory. RAs serve as the first point of contact for students needing assistance or who have queries regarding dorm life. In return, RAs receive free accommodation and sometimes a small salary and/or meal plan.

Under current regulations, after your first year of study, you may apply for permission to work off campus for up to 20 hours a week. You should note, however, that there is no guarantee that this request will be granted. If you are married and are in the United States on an F-1 student visa (see chapter 11), your spouse does not have permission to work. However, if you are in the United States on a J-1 student visa, your spouse is allowed to request a temporary work permit.

You should always check with your international student adviser before considering any form of employment. More information is available in Pre-departure Information.

Reducing Educational Costs

When planning your finances, consider these ways to reduce your costs:

Best Buys: Look for the colleges that offer you the highest quality education at the lowest cost.

Accelerated Programs: Completing a four-year bachelor's degree in three years saves thousands of dollars. Students can accelerate their programs by:

earning transfer credit or advanced standing for college-level studies completed in the home country (for example through A-levels, International Baccalaureate, advanced placement exams, or courses taken at local accredited post secondary institutions in your country, if accepted by the U.S. institution);

taking courses at a nearby community college if tuition is lower and credits are transferable;

attending classes during the summer if they are available;

taking one additional course each semester.

Tuition Waivers: Based on your first-year grades, some colleges award partial tuition waivers. A superior academic record could save you thousands of dollars.

Living Expenses: Becoming a resident assistant in a dormitory could save thousands of dollars in living costs. Working in the dining hall offers a modest salary plus "all you can eat" meals. Living off campus with a relative or friend saves money if suitable accommodation is available and public transport is efficient.

Two-year and Community Colleges: Many students save thousands of dollars in tuition by attending community colleges for their first two years and then transferring to four-year institutions to complete their degree. For more information on community colleges, please visit Community Colleges USA, the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) official resource for international students.

University Applications

Dr. Kiran kumar did MBBS from Siddhartha medical Selecting universities is a very time consuming and important process not only from the admission point of view but also because applying to universities is very expensive by Indian standards. Hence, the number of universities applied to has to be restricted to around 10 or 15 that best match your requirements.

The best university for you may not be the famous ones, but those that offer you your field of study as well as meet the other criteria important to you. The range of academic options as well as available universities are so wide that it is not possible to select the best in one go and it may take some time.

Check Top 100 Universities in the World 0022

The basic steps involved in the process of selecting universities are :

Step Criteria for short-listing No. of colleges short listed.

Self Evaluation (Level-I)

The first step is identifying your goals and needs which can be done by self evaluation.

A - Identify your reasons for pursuing higher education abroad

Are you motivated by career goals, job prospects, academic interest, personal satisfaction?

What particular specialization are you interested in?

It is important to match your objectives with what the universities offer. If your aim is research in some particular field, you should apply to universities with specialized departments in that field. If you are interested in practical experience, you should apply to universities located close to the commercial centers and important cities.

B - Realistically assess your academic and professional background

Are you a competitive student?

Are you dedicated and hardworking?

How good is your academic record?

Do you have any work experience or research work related to your field of study?

Do you have any credentials in extracurricular activities?

Only if you have a good academic background, you should apply to highly ranked universities. If you feel you are moderately placed, you should apply to mid ranked universities.

C - Get an academic focus

Do you have a relatively clear idea of your field of study?

Have you spoken to your professors, read journals to know more about your field and other new fields?

Education abroad is very different from education in India. Most universities abroad have a very flexible system where you can select your courses and focus more on your field of interest. There are also many specialized courses which may suit your needs.

D -Realistically assess your financial abilities

Will you get a financial assistance from the university?

Can you or your family finance your education and stay?

Do you have an overseas sponsor?

Are you eligible for funds from educational trusts?

The application process itself costs about Rs. ___- Rs. /- towards examination fees, postage, university application fees etc. Tuition and living expenses are also high and depend on the country you wish to study in. For a visa, you must be able to demonstrate your ability to fund your education and stay abroad. Level-II

It is best to narrow down your choice to 25 - 30 universities after this stage by looking at the following :

Program Offerings (BA, BS, BE, MS, MBA, DA, Ph.D., etc)

Specialization, faculty, thrust of the programs

University Rankings

Program Length

Cost -- Tuition, living expenses etc

Availability of Financial Assistance to International Students

Entrance Requirements (Bachelor degree in same field, work experience etc.)

Tests ( SAT, GMAT, TOEFL etc and minimum scores)

Accreditation status (Professional accreditation for some programs)

Student Profile ( Percentage of international students, average work experience levels, etc)

Enrollment -- Total available seats and the size of the school

Location ( Country, climate, semi-rural, metropolitan city etc)

Facilities -- Library, housing, student associations etc.

Type of Institution -- Public or Private

These are the usual criteria. You could prioritize your criteria out of this list and shortlist the number of universities on that basis to about 30. You could further shortlist your choice on basis of specific issues like tuition fees, availability of financial etc.

Here we give some details of most important criteria for selecting universities -- academic eligibility, standardized tests, Grade Point Average and Financial Aid.

Academic Eligibility

Each university and college has its own requirements for admission. There is considerable flexibility in the acceptance policies of most schools. The requirements are different for different countries. We list here the most common requirements :

Undergraduate Programs (BE, BS, BA etc.)

U.S.A., AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND

Most Universities all over the world require a minimum of 12 years of formal education. In Indian context, it implies qualifying in class 12th examination or junior college as applicable. The acceptable degrees include : Indian School Certificate, Intermediate Certificate, Higher school Certificate, Higher Secondary Certificate, All India Senior School Certificate. CANADA & U.K.

Some Universities in Canada and U.K. may ask for 13 years of education for entry into their bachelor degree programs. This would mean one further year of education after high school or taking up of some exams for eg. “A” level exams conducted by the British Council.

Many universities also accept the Indian system of 12 years schooling.

For more details, check out: Education in Canada & Education in U.K. section

Graduate & Postgraduate Programs (MA, MS, MBA etc.)

CANADA & U.S.A.

Most Universities require qualifications comparable to a U.S. Bachelor’s degree (Four Year Degree Program). A minimum of 16 years of formal education. In Indian context, it implies either qualifying in professional 4 years course like engineering or other such courses.

If you have completed a 3-year degree program in India, the advisable plan of action to maximize eligibility for U.S. and Canadian graduate schools is to apply for a Post Graduate degree here in India. A one-year university affiliated program will make up for the fourth year of a U.S. Undergraduate degree.

For more details, check out: Education in Canada & Education in U.S.A. section AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND & U.K.

Most New universities accept the Indian graduation system of three years for entry into most postgraduate courses. An Indian bachelor degree like B.A., B.Com. or B.Sc. is equivalent to a Bachelor (Ordinary) Degree.

However, some courses and universities may require a qualification equivalent to Bachelor (Honours) Degree in these countries, which require 16 years of formal education, which would mean another year after graduation or a four year degree course like B.E., B.Tech or other such courses.

Confirmation can only be obtained by either writing directly or formally applying to the universities concerned. However, for most Universities, a good first degree from a leading university in India or its equivalent is essential. Academic Record and Grade Point Average

Your past academic record is one of the most important deciding factors in getting admission to a college abroad. Most schools require you to have a reasonably good academic record especially for programs and courses offering a master’s or doctoral degree. Each university has its own minimum requirement for its programs, which are flexible depending on the candidate profile.

Universities in each country have their own marking and evaluation systems, which are considerably different from the Indian system. For e.g., U.S. follows the GPA (Grade Point Average) system which are based on 5 points scheme - A,B,C,D & F.

It is advisable not to convert your marks in the Indian system of grading to the American Grade Point Average system or any other system since the conversion may not be accurate. You may attach an explanatory note from your college to indicate your rank in your class and/or university. The letter may also indicate your place as compared to the class and the university average and the number of students in the class and the number of colleges and students in the university. You may also provide any other information or documents that you feel may help you in the admission process.

Standardized Test Scores

Every university has its own minimum requirements and scores with respect to standardized tests. Check out the requirements of the universities and short-list the ones that will accept your scores.

English Proficiency Tests

Fluency in English is mandatory for education abroad whether in U.S., U.K. or any other country. You would be required to take tests like TOEFL, IELTS, TSE or other tests depending on the country, university and program you are applying to. The minimum scores required in these tests vary depending on the college and program. Individual departments and colleges usually set their own minimum requirements for admissions. Other Tests

Different programs and colleges require you to take certain standardized tests for admission and there is a certain minimum that you have to score in those tests to get admitted to those universities. For a management graduate course, you are supposed to take GMAT and similarly for a graduate course in engineering, you are supposed to take GRE. For undergraduate courses, one has to take SAT.

For complete details on various tests, test preparation, reporting additional scores, test charges etc. Financial Aid

Most Indians are concerned about the high cost of education abroad and seek information on opportunities for financial assistance. The expenses for education abroad include tuition fees, living expenses, health insurance, transportation etc. This is an important criterion for selecting the courses as well as universities.

It is important to understand that most universities offer financial assistance to international students based primarily on merit and rarely on need. The amount, and type of assistance offered varies based on the university, department and level of study. Assistance of funds is more likely in Graduate studies and less in Undergraduate courses. Similarly, chances of assistance are more in specific countries like U.S.A. and U.K. Also funds are more likely to be available in fields like Engineering, Physical Sciences and Biological sciences, rather than in courses like Humanities, Social Sciences and Management.

For more details on financial aid, types of aid and aid available in various countries, Application Stage (Level III)

Once you start receiving application forms and material, go through in detail for the various requirements and deadlines like the application deadline, minimum scores required in the standardized tests, recommendation letters needed and other such information.

Tabulate all these requirements and compare them with your objectives and group the universities under three categories :

Schools that seem to match your requirements

Schools that are not suited to your needs

Schools that do not completely fit in any of the above two categories

Eliminate schools in Group 2 and check out in detail again the universities in Group 3. You can try and focus on departments that you would most like to attend and the school rankings in that field. And any special facilities that the school may offer you in that field. Try and make a list of schools on basis of fresh and more specific criteria like :

Objectives of the program and kind of methodology as well as approach

Admission / Entrance requirements

Availability of assistantships and funds in the field of your choice

SAT

Introduction

Most undergraduate programs in the US will require you to take the SAT I (we'll simply call it SAT from now on). The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) is a three-hour multiple-choice standardized examination. It essentially tests your verbal and quantitative skills. The SAT is written and administered by the ETS (Educational Testing Services) under the sponsorship of the College Entrance Examination Board (College Board). Both ETS and the College Board are private non-profit organizations based in the US.

Where do I obtain the Registration Form and the SAT Information Bulletin?

You can collect your free SAT Information Bulletin from the USEFI office located nearest to you. The Information Bulletin will contain the registration form. It will also contain information on the test centres located near you. ETS has appointed several testing agencies worldwide that act as franchisees for ETS. Your information bulletin will contain information on the Testing Agency in your country.

There are three common ways of registering for the SAT.

Mail: Once you've filled up the registration form you can mail it to the:

College Board SAT I

P.O. Box 6200

Princeton NJ 08541-6200

This is mainly for students who are paying the test fee through a draft, or money order or cheque. Or those who have opted for Sunday testing or wish to avail of the Services for Students with Disabilities Program.

Fax: Fill up the registration form and fax it to 001 609 683 1234. You will be required to pay an additional $5 as fee for registration by fax. Note that you will need to possess an international credit card to be able to register through fax.

Online: This is by far the easiest way to register for the SAT. Simply log on to www.sat.org and fill up the registration form online. You will be required to provide your credit card number.

What is the format of the SAT?

There are 7 sections on the SAT. Here is the break up of those 7 sections:

Two 30-minute verbal sections

Two 30-minute math sections

One 15-minute verbal section

One 15-minute math section

One 30-minute math/verbal section (experimental)

As you may have seen, there will be one 30-minute math/verbal section, which will be experimental. This means that you will not be scored on this section. ETS uses these questions for its own research. However, it is difficult to understand which section is the experimental section, while you're taking the test. Therefore, it is suggested that you put in your best on all sections.

You may expect 3 types of questions on the verbal sections:

Sentence completion questions (19 questions)

Analogy questions (19 questions)

Critical reading questions (40 questions)

Total number of questions will be 78.

What will there be in the math section?

You may expect 3 types of questions on the math sections:

Regular multiple-choice math (35 questions)

Quantitative comparisons (15 questions)

Grid-ins (10 questions)

Total number of questions will be 60.

The SAT I is on a total score of 1600. There are 800 points in the math section and 800 in the English section.

Around four to five weeks after you take the SAT, ETS will send you your score report which will contain both your verbal and math score. Scores will be reported on a scale running between 200-800 points for each of the two sections. A score of 500 on any section is accepted as an average score.

SAT scores are always in multiples of 10. This means that your score will always have 0 at the end, for instance, 1100 or 1210 and not 1101 or 1211.

Your score report will also mention your percentile score. A percentile score tells you how well you did in relation to others taking the SAT. For instance, if percentile score is 78 it means that you fared better than 78% of the students who took that SAT.

How important is the SAT?

Your SAT score is an important part of the application process. Many colleges and universities will lay serious emphasis on your SAT score. However, it is not the most important thing also. Many universities lay considerable emphasis on factors like academic records, co-curricular activities, special interests and talents, the recommendation letters, essays, GPA etc.

Therefore, while it is advisable to put in your best effort in preparing for the SAT, you need not feel too disheartened if you don't score too well. You can make a strong application file by working on the other aspects of the application process as well.

How to Crack the SAT?

You must remember that no matter what anyone says, the SAT is not a measure of your intelligence. Most people tend to take it as that and think that a score of 800/800 means that the student is highly intelligent while a low score indicates that the student is not intelligent. This is not true. It is possible to do well on the SAT by adopting a systematic approach and practicing consistently.

To crack the SAT and do well on it, you don't actually need to work very hard but you must learn to work smartly. By organizing your study schedule and adopting certain techniques, almost anyone can do well on the SAT. So cheer up, take heart and start preparing and planning from today!

Reporting your SAT score

The Registration Bulletin, containing the Test Scheduling Form will allow you to list four universities where your SAT scores will be sent directly. The charges for this are included in the registration fee itself. If you would like to report your score to additional universities you will be required to pay $6.50 per university.

Canceling your SAT score:

There is a provision for you to cancel your SAT score. If you feel that you have done horribly on the test and that your score will be exceptionally low, you may cancel your score, at the test center itself, by requesting for a test score cancellation form. Remember you cannot get a part of your score cancelled. If you wish to cancel, your entire test score will be cancelled.

It is advisable not to cancel your test scores. For one, many test takers feel they've done miserably, when in reality they've done well. Besides, you will receive your percentile scores as well. So even if the test is harder than usual remember the scores of others will be low as well. A note of caution, never cancel your score on the same day as the test. This is because you're most likely to be extra nervous on the day of the exam and you don't want a hasty step to make you regret later. Take a day or two, consult your guidance counselor or anybody you can rely on and then decide.

“History fails has no clues in giving one example who had defeated in spite of putting 100 percentile of their commitment”

(Or)

“Common people wait for the time to come. Winners will first create an opportunity and convert into a success with their wit.”

Let me start the SOP with my self-introduction. Myself XXXX, planning to pursue Masters in Computer Sciences from your University.

I am from an environment which is a perfect mix and match of village, town, and a city. People here are kind-hearted and are of helping nature.

Academics

I consider myself as an above average or even a brilliant student when it comes to academics. I have achieved 71% in my SSC exams which is a start up to my career. My wish to continue the same progress throughout my career has taken a shape in my intermediate education. Many thought that my decision of taking Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry as my majors is just a casual decision. But with my sincerity I scored a dashing 90% which has proved that “I was not futile, but outrageous”. I carried out the same characteristic in my under graduation also.

My groundwork to select the course and College started from here itself. With my interest in my Sciences and Mathematics I have shown interest in Electricals and Electronics. Also my seniors gave an opinion that this field is having multiple opportunities for further studies and for the career opportunities. Finally, I decided that this group is a win-win situation.

I had my foot in Electrical Engineering. From the day one, I maintained the same graph till the end of my under graduation. The various concepts like current, voltage, circuits, and different theorems had dragged the real out of me. But all that hard input became light when I scored 78% in my Undergraduate exams. I jumped into jubilance after my results. Even my project work in final year had won accolades all over the college.

Qualities

I am very confident and my marks will tell you this. The school and colleges I have studied contributed a lot in my effective communication skills. I am innovative and different in my ideas and also the way I execute it. I always try to keep and maintain a good relationship with others. I believe others very quickly. This is my strength and weakness as well.

Why USA?

“When a man is tired of USA, he is tired of life”.

I am one of those who dreamt of having higher studies in USA. USA is a land of quality universities and a treasure of opportunities, those are looking for. Doing higher studies over there is my childhood fascination. And it all happened so that the university I want to pursue Masters (your University) is also in USA. I am very lucky for that.

Also the technical and social advancements of the country mould you as a better human being with a treasure of wide knowledge and help you for self-growth.

Why Course?

I am very inquisitive about computers. This inquisitiveness came during my under graduation, when I registered for the crash courses like C, C++ and the basics of Java.

After my graduation, doing higher studies became inevitable for me. Then I thought, instead of going with the tide and pursue some course which the time will decide, let me decide my own fate. With this clarity, I decided to pursue Masters in Computers.

Also the opportunities for a Computers Graduate are more compare to other graduates.

“The field of Computers is Immortal. “

Goal

“Ordinary people strive for living hood and geniuses strive to provide it for others also”. This is the way I look at life. In my perspective, the education you pursue and the job you do should help the needy in some way or the other. In my nearer future, I want to be in a good position by establishing my own firm and generate employment for others. Thus it will be a two way beneficial. If I will be able to do that I will become a role model for at least a few.

Hobbies

Watching movies is my hobby and my source of recreation. I watch light weight movies and language is not a bar. I love unwinding with friends for a shopping. Often on I also play indoor games, whenever I got time.

Ideals

I don’t think, for a girl, no other person stood first as an idol rather than her own father and I am no more an exception. He is very industrious, focused, and a hard worker. His broader thinking sense is the reason behind my achievements so far. Next to my father, I love Rajini kanth very much. The way he manages larger than life image is unbelievable. He is very sober and down to earth.

Why University?

When I was searching for your University online, I couldn’t found a reason to hesitate to apply. By the testimonials I understood that the fact that the University has produced many scholars, entrepreneurs, Engineers and doctors worldwide. The two-hour long visit of your website has shot all my doubts.

I was aware of the fact that having a spectacular academic background will help me to understand the topics better, but to excel it I had to sweat a lot. I am ready to give my two year of time for that, if I got the admission at your University.

I think I justified my reasons for all above and the remaining I can do is to wait for your call.

Information Systems Management

There is an old paradigm that says, "To stay where you are, keep running". Today I realize how true it is because unless we keep track of the changes and advances being made we will be considered pariah. As I stand at the threshold of completing my undergraduate study, after carefully contemplating the various career options open to me I have decided to go in for graduate study that calls for personal commitment in fulfilling the crafts of independent research and dedicated involvement. In turn, I shall get intellectual satisfaction and gratification of becoming a contributor of knowledge with research, and the greater personal rewards of memory and discovery. Now, on the verge of completion of my Under-Graduate Studies, I realize that my present knowledge would not suffice. I feel that unless one is erudite in his field, one cannot be fully satisfied.

I also feel that “Every person is born with an innate flair, the moment your realize it you become a great person”. It was at high school that my fascination for electronic gadgets coupled with a desire to be a skilled programmer, prompted me to choose Electronics and Communication as the major for my Bachelor’s Degree.

I was not happy with just understanding a phenomenon, but wanted a real time experience. This interest in logical and computational thinking led me to take up Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as my major subjects at the Pre-University level after completing my Schooling with 90%. I completed my pre-University education with 88%.

For my under graduate studies, I have opted for “ Electrical and Communications Engineering” in MVSR College of Technology, where I find my diligent study has brought home to me very strongly, that there is still a vast field that I must explore and master to achieve my goal of being the best. The economic technological liberalization that is taking place in India would ensure that I would be able to use my expertise, to make my country a leader in the area of Information Science and Technology. My expertise in engineering subjects imbibed in me, an interest to pursue further education in this field.

During my undergraduate studies, I realized that the curriculum was exhaustive. It provided an in-depth theoretical background of every subject, but that was not enough for me. I needed a program that would help me to acquire a higher level of knowledge, leadership skills and problem solving ability to tackle the most diverse and complex problems. I realize that a Masters degree in Information Systems Management will enrich me by transforming me into a complete professional and providing me with the raw materials necessary to get a winning edge over others.

The answer to Management Information Systems was a Graduate Program in Information Systems. Management

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” Andre Gide.

Technologies close to the realms of science fiction; ideas that were impossible to achieve in the years to come; questions that inadvertently resulted in complicated solutions, aroused the curiosity in me and motivated to explore the boundaries of imagination. The spark of taking up new challenges had ignited in me, and led me sub-consciously to seek answers. Never disheartened or discouraged of failures, I envisioned plans for a great future. In order to march into a future I needed vigour and a desire to excel, through theoretical study and practical experience. I possess sufficient drive and impetus to create a technologically advanced tomorrow by offering my share through the medium of graduate studies.

Growing up as a child in business family, I spend much time to observe and assimilate the nuances of business. I realized a craving to learn the processes involved, and was introduced to the fundamentals of Managerial Economics and Financial Analysis and I took keen interest in gathering an insight into all the issues associated with the business.

Pursuing Engineering, I aspired to gain practical exposure in Biotechnology and took up research in projects titled “Insilico analysis of dipeptidyl peptidase -4 inhibitors” and “Process and Quality Analysis of Carlsberg Beer”. I was curious about the Marketing and Production strategies involved, and this resulted in a decision to undertake Management Studies.

The knowledge from books and practical experience that I have gained is meagre and fragmentary. I realized that I was languishing on the shores and not venturing into the vast ocean of Management Studies, where my perennial thirst for a vast knowledge would be quenched. Creating effective, ethical and efficient methods in business by using the modern technology is my goal now.

The Australian Universities are known to successfully combine traditional values of excellence in teaching and research, and challenge conventional practices to produce new ways of developing courses. Students learn to play a vital role and go places after completion of a course. Moreover they have state-of-the art libraries. The urbaneness of the people and the weather are the added features that catch the eye of a foreign student, and improve the quality of stay.

These motives combined with objectives, passions and dreams close to my heart, directed me to choose Central Queensland University, for my Fundamental Research. I am confident of meeting the requirements of the University, and also possess the right attitude and aspiration, towards education and research. The Master's program at this university will enable me to acquire expertise and kindle the flame in me to warm towards the relentless pursuit of knowledge and skill. I am looking forward towards an opportunity, and call of the future, and a journey to a new shore, Australia.
